MIKE CHRYSTAL
I was born in Newbury, Berkshire in 1950 but spent most of my formative years in Stoke-on-Trent after my father died when I was very young.
I went to Grammar School in Staffordshire and after gaining four ‘A’ Levels joined the Civil Service as an Officer of Customs and Excise. This interesting and varied job has taken me all round the UK covering most areas of tax and revenue collection, ending up in the VAT office in central Bristol.
I was fortunate enough, against some stiff competition, to gain early retirement in 2001 when
H. M. Customs and Excise was looking to reduce staff numbers before combining with the Inland Revenue to form the current Revenue and Customs.
I now work part time during term time only as a technician in the Design and Technology Faculty at Sheldon Academy where I get the chance to practice my carpentry and DIY skills.
